WHAT IS TEETH WHITENING TREATMENT?

Teeth whitening is an effective and conservative cosmetic treatment that lightens the color of yellowed teeth. Teeth whitening has been practiced in dentistry for centuries.

Teeth whitening is one of the most common elective dental procedures because it is inexpensive, highly effective, and provides fast results.

Many people invest in whitening treatments to improve their appearance and boost their self-confidence. Teeth whitening is also less expensive than other cosmetic procedures (such as veneers).

Treatment success is different for each patient. Everyone has different tooth properties such as opacity, translucency, gloss and fluorescence. Some patients need more treatment to see results, while others require less care. Fortunately, you don’t have to cut out your favorite foods and drinks if you want whiter teeth. With the procedures to be performed in our clinic, it will be possible to whiten your teeth quickly and effectively.

WHAT CAUSES TEETH DISCOLORATION AND STAINING?

The color of your teeth depends on your lifestyle, diet, habits and oral care practices. Tooth discoloration also falls into two categories: extrinsic and intrinsic.

External tooth stains are superficial surface stains that occur naturally throughout a person’s life. It is caused by consuming dark-colored food/drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, and curry. Tobacco products can also cause extrinsic discoloration.

Intrinsic tooth stains are deeper stains that develop on the inner layer (dentin) of the teeth. These stains are more difficult to remove than superficial enamel stains (external). Intrinsic discoloration is often caused by excessive fluoride use and certain medications.

The main causes of external and internal tooth discoloration are:

  • Genetics: Everyone has different colored teeth and enamel structures that affect tooth color. Some people are also born with thicker teeth or darker enamel.
  • Cancer treatments: Some cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation, can cause tooth discoloration.
  • Natural aging: As people age, the outer layer of tooth enamel naturally erodes, causing tooth discoloration and yellowing.
  • Amalgam dental restorations: Amalgam restorations (silver cavity fillings) can cause black tooth discoloration because they contain sulfur.
  • Some medications: Tetracycline, antihistamines, antipsychotics, and high blood pressure medications can cause tooth discoloration.
  • Tobacco products: Smoking or chewing tobacco causes tooth discoloration over time. Dentists recommend quitting to ensure your teeth, gums, and body stay healthy.
  • Dark-colored food and beverages: Surface stains are often caused by excessive consumption of coffee, dark tea, soda, and red wine. Even dark berries like blackberries can cause discoloration.
  • Using tetracycline while pregnant: Mothers who used tetracycline (antibiotics for bacterial diseases) while pregnant may cause tooth discoloration in their children.
  • Fluoride: Excessive consumption of fluoride, especially from tap water, which is naturally high in fluoride, can cause discoloration or white streaks on the teeth.

Teeth whitening is a form of dentistry and should only be performed on the dentist’s prescription by a dentist or other regulated dentist, such as a dental hygienist or dental therapist.

beauty salons offer teeth whitening, but if you don’t have a dentist, this is illegal and can put your oral health at risk.

You can also buy DIY teeth whitening kits at home, but these can also come with risks.

TEETH WHITENING IN OUR CLINIC

Our dentist will measure your teeth to make a mouth guard and tell you how to use it with a bleach gel. Then, using your at-home mouth guard, you apply the gel regularly over a period of several weeks. Some whitening gels can be left on for up to 8 hours at a time, which can shorten the treatment time.

whitening, also known as power whitening, is another type of teeth whitening system a dentist can provide. A whitening product is painted on your teeth and then a light or laser is shined on them to activate the whitening. Laser whitening takes about an hour.
