JAW JOINT DISORDERS

Structural and functional disorders in the jaw joint and system are generally called temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This can mean clicking sounds, squeaking, locking and pain in the chewing system and jaw joint.

Jaw joint and masticatory system disorders are generally referred to as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This can mean clicking sounds, squeaking, locking and pain (myofascial pain) in the masticatory system and in the jaw joint. Clenching is one of the most important factors that cause these disorders, and the stress accumulated throughout the day occurs during sleep. The person closes their jaws tightly or moves their teeth by sliding them on top of each other. This habit causes teeth to wear or break, gums recession and hot-cold sensitivity, headache, neck, ear and back pain, limited or no mouth opening, tenderness or pain in the joint area, noise from the joints while eating.

These disorders can be divided into three categories:

About 10% of the entire population suffers from chewing system disorders. If pain and functional disorders occur, they should be treated. Women are more affected than men, and younger people are more affected than older patients.

Symptoms of a TMJ disorder may include:

CAUSES OF JAW JOINT DISORDER

It is mostly vague and multi-causal. It can include stress, forced orthodontic treatments, accidents, developmental disorders, faulty dentures, grinding, endocrine disorders, emotional tension.

DIAGNOSIS OF JAW JONIT DISSORDER

Chewing system disorders can be detected through detailed conversations, instrumental and clinical function analyzes in patients and models, measurement and analysis of the jaw joint, and occlusal examinations. X-ray photographs and optionally 3D X-ray can help identify structural causes.

JAW JOINT DISORDER TREATMENT

Treatment of TMJ: it is important to use reversible treatments such as bite splints, pain medications, TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), trigger point infiltrations, autogenic training, physical therapy, and osteopathy.

In the case of acute pain, water-filled bite pads called Aualizers and optional analgesics may provide relief.

Aqualizers should not be worn for more than 2-3 weeks. Once acute symptoms have resolved, the dentist can take further steps, such as functional analysis and preparation of molding and bite splints.
