20 Years Tooth Extraction

We all have wisdom teeth, but when is it time to keep them or let them go? At your last dental examination, your dentist may have informed you that it is time for the teeth to be extracted. While this may make you feel anxious, you will find that wisdom teeth removal is common and simple.

WHAT ARE WISDOM TEETH?

Wisdom teeth are your third molars, which live far behind your gum line in your upper and lower jaws. They usually lie below the gum line and grow as they push on your teeth as they try to come out of the gum line. Typically, this happens for patients aged 17-25 years. Our clinic will use an X-ray to determine where your wisdom teeth are growing and where it may affect your teeth. Not every patient has to have their wisdom teeth removed, but most patients do because their oral health can be adversely affected by these molars.

REASONS FOR WISDOM TOOTH EXTRACTION

There are several reasons that may suggest extraction of wisdom teeth, either single or combined. A dental X-ray is needed to understand how these molars will affect your teeth. It’s best to have this checked in late adolescence, as it can help with fewer complications later on.

  • There isn’t enough room:: Sometimes, there isn’t enough room for all those teeth! Your wisdom teeth are your last teeth to erupt and it can be difficult to have enough space in your jaw. If your jaw begins to curve where your wisdom teeth will develop, there probably isn’t enough room.
  • Impacted teeth: Usually, when wisdom teeth erupt, they can affect the surrounding teeth. This is especially true when there is not enough space. The wisdom teeth will still be pushed forward to grow into their position. However, depending on how this is shaped, it can strain other molars in your mouth. They can also become trapped, causing pain and discomfort in the gums and jaw.
  • Gum disease and cavities: Wisdom teeth lie far behind your gum line, making it a hard to reach and clean spot. They can also come too close to your molars, pushing them off, or coming at an angle that makes brushing and flossing difficult. When this is left to circumstances, patients may find they begin to develop cavities and gum disease. You need to remove them to allow proper oral hygiene.

You should have an oral examination by our clinic to determine whether it is time for wisdom teeth to be extracted. You can book now or visit us.
